By using improper pruning methods healthy plants are often weakened or deformed.

Tree Bracing & Cabling

What is a tree brace?

Cables and brace rods are supplemental structural supports intended to reduce the risk of failure of weak branches and multiple stems. Cables generally consist of extra high strength steel and are attached to bolts installed in the upper crown of a tree. They are intended to limit the movement of the supported branches so they are less likely to fail during storms. Braces are thread rod that are installed through unions of weak branches and multiple stems to provide more rigid support from torsional (twisting) forces that can occur in violent weather.

Hire a professional arborist. Many of the trees on your property may be saved if the proper steps are taken. Allow our arborists to meet with you to assess the trees on your property, determine which are healthy and structurally sound, and suggest measures to preserve and protect them.

A fertility program for woody plants begins with obtaining an analysis of soil pH or level of acidity. Soil pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. Soils with a pH below 7 are acidic while those above 7 are alkaline. Adjusting pH levels is important not only because specific plants grow best within a certain range of pH, but also soil pH affects the availability of both major and minor nutrient elements. Furthermore, soil pH influences the level of microbial activity in soils. Microbes involved in mineralization of organic matter are most active between a pH of 6 and 7. At extremes in pH, many nutrients occur in forms unavailable for uptake by plant roots. Figure 1 shows the relationship between pH and availability of elements essential to plant growth.

Mulch Supply

Mulching trees and shrubs is a good method to reduce landscape maintenance and keep plants healthy. Mulches eliminate mowing around trees and shrubs and provide a physical barrier that prevents damage from lawn mowers and weed trimmers. A 2- to 4-inch layer (after settling) is adequate to prevent most weed seeds from germinating. Mulch should be applied to a weed-free soil surface.
